New Delhi, March 11: Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday underscored the importance of water conservation and community participation in ensuring sustainable water management while addressing the Jal Mahotsav 2026.
The President said water in India is not only a basic necessity but also deeply connected with culture, traditions and livelihoods. She noted that for years, particularly in rural areas, villagers—especially women and children—had to travel long distances to access drinking water.
Referring to the Jal Jeevan Mission, Murmu said the initiative has significantly improved access to safe drinking water in rural households by providing functional tap connections.
“Providing clean water is not only a matter of convenience; it is linked to time, health and dignity,” she said, noting that households that once struggled for water now have access to safe drinking water at home.
The President emphasised that conservation of natural resources becomes more effective when both government and communities take collective responsibility.
She said initiatives such as Jal Arpan Diwas—which involves handing over water supply infrastructure to gram panchayats—will strengthen community ownership and improve grassroots-level water management.
Murmu also highlighted the role of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in supporting water-related initiatives, including water testing as well as operation and maintenance activities in many regions.
She further stressed the need for a coordinated approach to enhance water security, citing efforts to promote greywater management in rural areas under the Swachh Bharat Mission and groundwater recharge initiatives supported by the Central Groundwater Board.
The President also referred to national campaigns such as Catch the Rain and Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari, which promote rainwater harvesting and encourage public participation in water conservation.
She urged citizens to treat water as a valuable resource and integrate water conservation into daily life, particularly by raising awareness among younger generations.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti is organising Jal Mahotsav 2026 from March 8 to March 22 as a nationwide campaign to strengthen public participation and community ownership in rural drinking water services under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
