New Delhi, June 01: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held bilateral talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, focusing on expanding cooperation across trade, economy, technology and people-to-people exchanges.

The meeting marks a key diplomatic engagement during President Hlaing’s five-day visit to India, aimed at reinforcing longstanding ties and exploring new avenues of partnership between the two neighbouring countries.

The two leaders discussed measures to deepen collaboration in multiple sectors while advancing regional peace, connectivity and economic engagement.

Later in the day, President Hlaing is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

As part of his official itinerary, the Myanmar leader will also visit The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One exhibition at the Raipithora cultural complex in Delhi, showcasing the sacred Piprahwa relics associated with Lord Buddha.

Ahead of the Prime Minister-level talks, President Hlaing held discussions with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Sunday, with security cooperation emerging as a key area of engagement.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the visiting leader on Saturday and highlighted the positive momentum in bilateral relations.

“Pleased to call on President U Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar in New Delhi today. Appreciate his positive sentiment towards deepening our longstanding bilateral cooperation,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.

He added that the meeting with Prime Minister Modi would help advance the partnership for “peace, progress and prosperity”.

President Hlaing arrived in New Delhi on Sunday and was received by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.

Welcoming the visiting leader, Singh said the visit reflects the strong civilisational, cultural and people-to-people connections between India and Myanmar while offering an opportunity to deepen cooperation across diverse sectors.

The Myanmar President began his India visit from Gaya in Bihar, where the Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as a reflection of the deep spiritual, historical and bilateral ties shared by the two nations.

This is President Hlaing’s first visit to India after assuming office. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers, senior officials and business representatives.

During the visit, President Hlaing is also scheduled to participate in a business forum. On June 2, he will travel to Mumbai for meetings with industry leaders and site visits aimed at strengthening economic and commercial engagement.
