  • Mitigation of carbon emission through Eco-Restoration/Plantation in abandoned well sites of OIL – Hundreds of native species saplings are planted every year to maintain ecological balance and build climate resilience. As part of OIL’s commitment towards National Determined Contributions (NDC), an ambitious project for reducing our Green House Gas (GHG) emission levels has been undertaken by OIL in association with NEIST, Jorhat.

The project had a three pronged approach i.e. to restore abandoned well sites of OIL, Plantation of trees and sequestrate Carbon Dioxide. More than 78,000 trees and shrubs were planted in a scientific manner and reclamation of abandoned well sites in Assam.

  • Mass Tree Plantation and Environment Awareness Drive –OIL has carried out mass tree plantation and environment drives with various academic and social institutions within the vicinity of its operational areas. Every year around 1000 nos of saplings are being distributed to various departments/schools on the occasion of World Environment Day.
  • Induction of Technology to reduce gas flaring – OIL continues to invest in reducing air emission levels through adoption of cleaner technologies. Presently low-pressure (LP) gas is collected and monetised through OIL’s own gas compression facilities as well as hired gas Compression services on Built, Own and Operate (BOO) basis.
  • Use of cleaner fuel Engines and noiseless engines – OIL uses Natural Gas Fuelled Engines in most of its installations instead of use of High Speed Diesel (HSD). All Generating Sets are being procured with Acoustic Enclosures for noise attenuation.
  • Restoration of Well sites – In continuation of the prevailing practice and with the intent to preserve ecology and the work towards the Vision of Oil India Limited to inspire sustainable development in all its engineering practices, the company carries out restoration jobs subsequent to the completion of the drilling operations.
  • Oily Sludge Processing Plant – Oily Sludge generated at various installations are collected, transferred and processed at the Oily Sludge Processing Plant in order to recover crude oil and to avert the any risk of potential hazard, Bioremediation technology is also being used for restoration/reclamation of the affected sites and was found to be effective.
  • Financial Assistance to State Forest Department, Assam – OIL has extended a financial assistance of Rs. 20 Crore (Rupees Twenty Crore only) to the State Forest Department, Assam for Environmental Management and conservation.
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Study – As per the EIA Notification 2006 of MoEF&CC, OIL carries out detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Study for all its operational areas before applying for Environmental Clearance. Mitigation measures are taken as per study report and MoEF&CC’s stipulated conditions.
