CNG Prices Rise to Rs 86/kg in Mumbai After Rs 2 Hike; Piped Cooking Gas Costlier by 50 Paise

CNG Prices Rise

Mumbai, May 30: Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have risen after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) increased retail rates by Rs 2 per kilogram, taking the price to Rs 86 per kg from Saturday.

The revised rate applies across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and adjoining areas served by the city gas distributor.

This marks the second CNG price increase in May, following an earlier Rs 2 per kg hike announced on May 14. MGL has also raised piped natural gas (PNG) cooking gas tariffs by 50 paise per unit across the region.

The price revision comes amid continued volatility in global energy markets and supply concerns linked to the West Asia conflict, which have put upward pressure on fuel costs.

Petrol and diesel prices have also firmed up in recent weeks as state-run oil marketing companies partially passed on higher international crude prices. In Mumbai, petrol was priced at Rs 111.21 per litre and diesel at Rs 97.83 per litre on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Centre has directed public sector oil marketing companies to strengthen LPG inventories, asking fuel retailers to maintain stocks equivalent to at least 30 days of domestic demand to ensure uninterrupted household supply.

Earlier this week, the Petroleum Ministry stated that PSU oil companies are absorbing losses of around Rs 550 crore per day on petrol, diesel and LPG sales under government direction to shield consumers from the full impact of global price spikes.

The ministry maintained that crude, petrol and diesel supplies remain adequate nationwide, although localised shortages and crowding have been reported due to panic buying.

To contain inflationary pressures, the government had reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 per litre on March 27, 2026. Officials said Indian retail fuel prices have risen by only 8–9 per cent since the crisis began, compared with steeper increases reported in several neighbouring countries.
