New Delhi, July 16: The Ministry of Power has invited public comments and stakeholder feedback on the Draft Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE-III) Norms, marking the next phase of India’s efforts to improve fuel efficiency and energy conservation in the automobile sector. The proposed regulations are intended to apply to M1 category passenger vehicles manufactured or imported for sale in India during the period 2027-28 to 2031-32.
The CAFE-III norms are designed to enhance the fuel efficiency of passenger vehicles and support India’s broader objectives of reducing fuel consumption, lowering carbon emissions and improving energy security. The proposed standards will cover vehicles falling under the M1 category, which includes passenger cars used for personal transportation.
The Ministry has urged automobile manufacturers, industry associations, experts and the general public to review the draft and provide suggestions before the consultation period closes. Stakeholders can submit their comments to the Under Secretary (Energy Conservation), Ministry of Power, or send feedback via email.
According to the Ministry, the last date for submitting suggestions and feedback is August 6, 2026. The consultation process is intended to ensure that the final framework reflects industry requirements while supporting India’s transition towards cleaner, more fuel-efficient mobility.
The Draft CAFE-III Norms will also be uploaded on the official websites of the Ministry of Power and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), allowing wider public access and participation in the policy-making process.
The proposed regulations form part of the government’s ongoing strategy to strengthen energy efficiency standards, encourage technological innovation in the automotive sector and contribute to India’s long-term climate and sustainability goals.
The release of the Draft CAFE-III Norms represents an important step towards improving fuel economy standards in India’s passenger vehicle sector while providing stakeholders an opportunity to shape future energy efficiency regulations before they are finalised.
