Centre Offers Additional 10% Commercial LPG to States and UTs

Centre Unveils LPG Allocation Formula to Support Industries During Crisis

New Delhi, March 18: The government on Wednesday announced an additional 10 per cent allocation of commercial LPG to States and Union Territories, linked to reforms aimed at accelerating the transition from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG).

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, all domestic refineries are operating at high capacity with adequate crude inventories, while LPG production has increased by around 40 per cent to ensure supply stability. The ministry also confirmed that India remains self-sufficient in petrol and diesel, with no imports required to meet domestic demand.

LPG distribution continues without disruption, with no reported “dry-outs” at distributor outlets. Digital adoption has improved significantly, with online LPG bookings rising from 83 per cent to 93 per cent and Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) coverage expanding from 53 per cent in February to about 81 per cent, enhancing transparency and reducing diversion.

To ease pressure on LPG demand, the government has also allocated an additional 48,000 kilolitres of kerosene to states and UTs as an alternative cooking fuel. Citizens have been advised to avoid panic buying as fuel supplies remain adequate.

Priority sectors, including domestic PNG and CNG transport, continue to receive full gas supply, while supply to industrial and commercial users is being regulated at around 80 per cent. Commercial LPG users such as hotels, restaurants, hospitals, and hostels are being encouraged to switch to PNG connections through authorised city gas distribution networks.

Key city gas distributors, including Indraprastha Gas Limited, Mahanagar Gas Limited, GAIL Gas Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, are offering incentives to promote PNG adoption.

The government is also expanding the city gas distribution network to support cleaner fuel adoption and ensure reliable supply to critical sectors such as cold storage units and agricultural processing facilities.
