Government Releases White Paper on Indigenous AI Models

New Delhi, Mar 15 In a white paper titled “Advancing Indigenous Foundation Models,” the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India outlines a plan for creating India’s own AI models and bolstering the nation’s digital ecosystem.

The document is a part of the AI Policy White Paper Series, which aims to influence India’s AI strategy.

In order to increase transparency, inclusivity, and alignment with national priorities, the paper emphasizes the necessity of indigenous foundation models trained on datasets pertinent to India.

Additionally, it emphasizes the significance of small language models (SLMs) and large language models (LLMs). SLMs are more cost-effective and tailored to particular domains, whereas LLMs can manage general tasks across industries.

In addition to fostering linguistic inclusion and innovation throughout India’s digital ecosystem, such AI systems could assist industries like agriculture, healthcare, education, and MSMEs.
