He participated in a function organized at the Lignite Hall and handed over appointment orders to the kin of NLCIL employees who had lost their lives due to COVID-19. NLC India Ltd., in a sympathetic gesture, had accorded approval to consider COVID-19 deaths of its employees, as Industrial accidents for providing compassionate employment to one of the legal heirs of the deceased employees. Accordingly, 85 such cases were considered for employment out of which 6 appointment orders were issued by the Minister today.
Pralhad Joshi stressed on the importance of coal in India’s energy security today. India had a balanced energy mix and this was helping us move steadily towards our Energy-Environmental goals. In this regard, NLC India’s efforts towards mining lignite and generating power deserved appreciation, he said.
Minister also informed that while the Expected Electricity Generation by 2040 would be approximately 3000 Billion Units, India’s energy demand was set to double by 2040. To cater to this demand, thermal coal demand by 2040 would increase to approximately 1500 MT. However, we would also have to be conscious about the environment and keep in mind our sustainable mining goals. Though we are doing our best to balance our dependence on Coal and Lignite with development of renewables, our transition to renewables will mostly be gradual.
He commended the significant role played by NLCIL in fighting COVID even as the country emerged from the global pandemic. He thanked all the coal warriors for their unhindered contribution even during the lockdown and paid his respect and tribute to those who laid their lives in serving the nation during COVID.
