New Delhi, Feb 24: The Union Cabinet of India, chaired by Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the North–South corridor of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) Ahmedabad Metro from GIFT City to Shahpur at an estimated cost of ₹1,067.35 crore.
The 3.33-km elevated extension will include three new stations and is targeted for completion within four years. GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Centre and the Government of Gujarat, will execute the project.
Connectivity and Ridership Impact
The extended corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers by 2029 and approximately 58,059 passengers by 2041. The expansion is expected to strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, a key financial and business hub.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I (APMC to Motera Stadium and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam) and Phase-II (Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City), spanning 68.28 km with 53 stations, have been operational since September 2022 and January 2026, respectively. The system currently records daily ridership of approximately 1.6 lakh passengers.
