Northeast Frontier Railway Speeds Up Electric Train Services Between Tripura and Assam

NFR electric train trial in Tripura

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) under the aegis of Ministry of Railways has accelerated preparations to launch regular electric train services between Tripura and Assam after successful MEMU trial runs. The move follows the completion of railway electrification in Tripura and is expected to improve connectivity, efficiency, and pave the way for Vande Bharat Express services.

Key Highlights

  • NFR intensifies trials for electric train services between Tripura and Assam.
  • Electric MEMU trains are undergoing trial runs on multiple routes.
  • 100% electrification of Tripura’s 271-km railway network has been completed.
  • Vande Bharat Express services to Agartala and Silchar are planned in the coming months.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has stepped up efforts to introduce regular electric train services between Tripura and Assam, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of railway connectivity in the Northeast. Trial operations of Electric Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains are currently underway before commercial services begin.

As part of the trials, six to eight-coach electric MEMU trains are operating between Agartala, Dharmanagar, Sabroom and Karimganj. Railway engineers are closely monitoring the overhead electrification system, voltage levels and other technical parameters to ensure safe and reliable operations before granting final approval.

The development comes after the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) completed 100 per cent electrification of the state’s 271-km broad-gauge railway network. The electrification project, launched in 2022 at a cost of Rs 46 crore, is expected to replace diesel-powered operations with cleaner and more efficient electric train services.

Rail connectivity in Tripura has expanded significantly over the decades, with Agartala connected in 2008, Sabroom in 2019, and the Agartala-Akhaura international rail link with Bangladesh completed in 2023. The Centre has also undertaken redevelopment of Agartala, Udaipur, Kumarghat and Dharmanagar railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Railway officials said that mandatory electric locomotive trial runs have already been completed between Agartala and Arunachal Junction in Assam, while the first electric goods train successfully operated between Badarpur and Jirania. Additional trial runs are planned before regular passenger services commence.

With electrification nearing completion, NFR is also preparing to extend Vande Bharat Express services to Agartala and Silchar, further strengthening rail connectivity across the Northeast. The initiative is expected to improve travel comfort, reduce travel time and enhance operational efficiency for passengers and freight services alike.

The introduction of electric train services will mark a major upgrade for Tripura’s railway network, improving sustainable transportation and strengthening the region’s integration with India’s expanding electrified rail corridor.
