New Delhi, March 10: : More than 25 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as of March 5, 2026, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.
According to Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, 25,02,217 rooftop solar installations have been completed out of 63,26,125 applications received through the scheme’s national portal.
Government spending under the programme has also increased significantly, with ₹14,585.29 crore utilised in FY26 (till March 5) compared with ₹7,822.92 crore in FY25, reflecting accelerating adoption of residential solar systems.
Launched in 2024, the scheme enables residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections to install rooftop solar systems by applying through the national portal, making the programme largely demand-driven.
The government estimates that installing rooftop solar panels in one crore households could generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and reduce 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the systems’ 25-year lifespan.
As of the end of 2025, the leading states in implementation include Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan.
In a separate response, Naik said India’s non-fossil fuel power generation capacity reached 266.78 GW as of December 31, 2025. This includes 258 GW of renewable energy capacity — comprising solar, wind, bioenergy and hydropower — along with 8.78 GW of nuclear power.
The government is also advancing the National Green Hydrogen Mission to position India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
