NLCIL felicitates Sajan Prakash, decides to develop world-class  swimming facilities at Neyveli

In keeping with the tradition of nurturing sports and encouraging sportspersons, Rakesh Kumar, Chairman cum Managing Director, NLCIL, presented a cash award of Rs. 5 Lacs to Olympian Sajan Prakash at a felicitation function on Sept. 13, at Lignite Hall, Neyveli, in the presence of Functional Directors, Chief Vigilance Officer, NLCIL, and DIG-CISF. Similar award of Rs. 5 Lakhs was also announced for two other Olympians, Selvi Revathi Veeramani and Selvi C.A. Bhavani Devi.

The event was conducted in accordance with COVID protocols.

A highlight was the release of MyStamp, an initiative by the postal department to honor high achievers. Rakesh Kumar, CMD, in the presence of S. Murugan, Superintendent of Post Offices, Cuddalore  Division, released the MyStamp as a tribute to Sajan Prakash.

The event commenced with a Cheering Rally over a two-km stretch in the Neyveli Township, in which Sajan Prakash, his mother and coaches traveled in an open jeep. CISF marathon runners, former sportspersons and school children joined the cavalcade.

As a tribute to the ace swimmer, NLCIL named its 50-metre aqua facility as “Olympian Sajan Prakash Pool,” thereby creating an edifice that will forever inspire aspiring swimmers. The high point of the event was declaration by Rakesh Kumar that swimming will be adopted as the corporate’s primary sport.

Rakesh Kumar also noted that NLCIL will encourage more youth from Neyveli and its surrounding villages and from all parts of the country in order to mine talent in the sport, by imparting world-class training and making state-of-the-art infrastructure available to all.

NLCIL is known for providing facilities for all round growth within the township, and offers facilities for swimming, track and field training, gymnasium and various indoor and outdoor games.

“Sajan’s journey is an incredible story of resilience and sporting excellence. He is a role model for the youth and an inspiration for all aspiring athletes of Neyveli and surrounding villages,” Rakesh Kumar said.

Sajan Prakash is the son of Smt. V.J. Shantymol, Asst. Personnel Officer, NLCIL, the driving force behind Sajan’s success. She is an athlete who competed in the 100m, 200m sprints at the 1987 World and Asian Juniors.

Recalling his association with Neyveli as a hometown boy who started swimming at age 5 in the township pool, Sajan Prakash said: “I am proud and ever thankful for NLCIL sports facilities, my swimming coaches Joy Joseph Thoppan and Saji Sebastian, and my mother, for making me an Olympian.”

Sajan Prakash is the first Indian ever to breach the Olympic “A” Qualification mark to qualify for the Tokyo games. He finished 24th overall in the 200 m Butterfly event. He has taken part in more than 40 international events, and awards won include Best Athlete of 35th National Games, National Champion for 8 years, 12 National Records, and the crowning glory of representing India at Rio and Tokyo Olympics.

The felicitation event was also attended by representatives from recognised Unions and Associations of Engineers and Executives, Women in Public Sector (WIPS), welfare associations, veteran sportspersons, school teachers and students with a keen interest in sports.

The event, streamed live on Youtube and covered in NLCIL’s Facebook page, was witnessed by an audience of over 3,000, including executives and staff at various NLCIL project locations across India.
