The International women’s day was celebrated at NLCIL in a grand manner.  Smt Vismita Tej, IRS, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Coal graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Smt S Rajeswari, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Idol Wing, Tamil Nadu was the Guest of Honour. Selvi K. Jayalakshmi, a student who has been selected to visit NASA and Smt. Jothimani, the only 60 Tonne capacity  Women Truck driver from Tamil Nadu were the Achiever Guests.

Shri Rakesh Kumar, Chairman cum Managing Director, NLCIL, presided over the function. Smt. Kanchan Rakesh Kumar, President, Neyveli Ladies Club released the souvenir on International Women’s Day. The souvenir was received by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries. Shri R.Vikraman, Director (Human Resources),  Shri N.N.M. Rao, Director/P&P, Shri Prabhakar Chowki, Director/Mines, Shri Shaji John, Director/Power, Shri Jaikumar Srinivasan, Director/Finance and Shri T. Vennkatasubramanian, CVO/NLCIL graced the occasion.  Smt. Shanthi Vikraman, Smt. Aruna Rao, Smt. Pushpalatha Chowki and Smt. Aancy John, Patrons of Neyveli Ladies Club, also graced the occasion. The event  powerfully started  with  screening of a Short Film showcasing the significant contributions made by the women employees of NLCIL to the company and the society and the contributions through skill development and empowerment of economically weaker women in villages surrounding Neyveli.  The short film also carried messages of CMD, Functional Directors, President and Patrons of Neyveli Ladies Club felicitations on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Ms. Rajashri Swati Trike, Addl. General Secretary, WIPS, welcomed the gathering. Smt. N. Ramalakshmi, General Secretary, WIPS, Neyveli Chapter, delivered the Women’s Day message.

During the occasion, sewing machines were distributed to six needy women from nearby villages by WIPS, NLCIL chapter. In recognition of the  achievement of Ms K Jayalakshmi, class 11 student, who has won the trip to  NASA in May 2020 and Smt. Jothimani, the only woman driver of 60 Tonne capacity, 24 wheeled heavy cargo truck from Tamil Nadu and a recipient of Kalpana Chawla award for Courage in the year 2015, the WIPS, Neyveli Chapter presented them cash award.

Smt. Rajeswari, IPS, Guest of Honour, in her address, urged to provide right platform to women to discuss their problem and to provide opportunity for growth so that they can live with dignity.  Shri Rakesh Kumar, CMD, NLCIL in his presidential address, recalled the contribution of women employees in the field of engineering, medicine, sports and other areas in NLCIL. He outlined  various opportunities provided by NLCIL in empowering Women employees and also the skill development initiatives extended to  women from Project Affected Families. He took pride in claiming that NLCIL is the first CPSE to constitute a sub-committee of the Board of Directors for “Skill Development Augmentation” with an objective to systematically upgrade the employability of PAPs and surrounding rural public.  Further, CMD appreciated the noteworthy achievements of Selvi K. Jayalakshmi and Smt. Jothimani. He lauded the role of WIPS, Neyveli Chapter and Neyveli Ladies Club for their role in skill development. As an initiative to empower the women from Project Affected Families, the   tailoring society would be given orders to stitch the Uniforms of Workmen of Contractors, executing works for NLCIL.

Smt Vismita Tej, IRS, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Coal, in her Chief Guest address, said that providing equal opportunities at workplace is the real empowerment for working women.  It is the duty of the organization concerned to ensure basic facilities such as Toilets and Creche for the working women. She further said that it should be left to the women employees to decide upon the degree of challenge to take as regards to assignments. The roles and jobs for women should not be stereotyped by the organizations. The role of family and the employer is to make the women as women of substance so that they automatically become women of success.

Shri R.Vikraman, Director (HR), on behalf of the Management of NLCIL announced a cash award of Rs.1.00 lakh each for Miss. K.Jayalakshmi and Smt. Jothi Mani Gowthaman, the achiever guests in recognition of their determination and dedication to scale up against all odds.

The event was further enriched by the delightful dance and song performances by NLCIL women employees. On this International Women’s Day, as a new initiative,  NLCIL management recognized the excellent contributions of 89 women from various career backgrounds by presenting them with appreciation awards.
