New Delhi, April 15: In line with the country’s resolve to reduce the carbon foot print in the Power Sector, NHPC has been taking the lead in the development of Renewable Energy Resources under the dynamic & energetic leadership of A.K. Singh, CMD, NHPC. Pursuing this goal, a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) Between District Administration, Chamba (Himachal Pradesh) and NHPC Limited For Development of “Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies” in Distt Chamba, Himachal Pradesh was signed on 15th April’ 2022.
MOU was signed by D. C. Rana, I.A.S. Deputy Commissioner & District Magistrate of Chamba on behalf of Himachal Pradesh and A.K. Pathak, Chief Executive Officer of NHPC Renewable Energy Limited on behalf of NHPC Limited in the auspicious presence of Jai Ram Thakur Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, KishanKapoor, MP Kangra, Pawan Nayyar, MLA Chamba & Ram SubhagSingh,Chief Secretary, Himachal Pradesh Govt. . During this occasion, Surjeet Kumar Sandhu , Group General Manager,Chamera-II& III Power Station was also present.
As per MOU , NHPC shall be developing a Pilot Green Hydrogen Mobility Project including Hydrogen production in District Chamba (HP). NHPC shall upscale hydrogen production on commercial scale to supply the hydrogen needs of Himachal Pradesh in different sectors like mobility, transportation, heating, micro grid & subsequent MoU shall be signed separately.
This Pilot project will create roadmap for future development of Green Hydrogen & subsequent reduction of the carbon emission in transportation sector and will also attract long term investment in Hydrogen economy creating different revenue streams & job opportunities for youth of Himachal Pradesh.
NHPC has formed a wholly owned subsidiary company for development of renewable energy, small hydro and green hydrogen projects named as NHPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL). This project shall be executed by NHPC Renewable Energy Limited, Research & Development Department of NHPC and Chamera-II Power Station of NHPC Limited.
Prime Minister in COP-26 had announced that India will go Carbon neutral by 2070 and by 2030 India will generate 500 GW from non-fossilfuel sources which will be 50% of total installed capacity and this initiative of Government of Himachal under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh & NHPC will be a big milestone in this matter.
