New Delhi, March 13: Coal production from captive, commercial and other mines in India crossed the 200 million tonnes (MT) mark on March 11 in FY26, according to the Ministry of Coal.
Captive and commercial coal mines accounted for 194.17 MT of the total output, while other mines contributed 6.06 MT, taking the combined production beyond the historic 200 MT milestone.
The sector also surpassed the entire FY25 production level of 197.32 MT on March 7, achieving the milestone 24 days earlier than the previous year. Overall production during the period recorded a year-on-year growth of 10.56%.
The ministry said the achievement reflects the coordinated efforts of Central and State Public Sector Undertakings along with private sector participants involved in the coal mining ecosystem.
Coal dispatch during the period also registered steady growth, rising 7.71% year-on-year from 182.98 MT to 197.09 MT, indicating improved supply capacity to key consuming sectors.
The government said it will continue to promote captive and commercial coal mining as a key component of India’s energy ecosystem through policy support and technological adoption.
The ministry added that strong domestic production has ensured coal supply remains ahead of consumption this year, resulting in record stock levels at mines and thermal power plants and supporting the country’s energy security objectives.
