India and Indonesia have significantly deepened their strategic partnership by signing a series of landmark agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Jakarta. The agreements span defence, maritime security, critical minerals, healthcare, and industrial cooperation, reflecting growing trust between the two Indo-Pacific partners.
In a major boost to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing, the two countries signed an agreement for the supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Indonesian military. Indonesia is also expected to procure DRDO-developed Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles, further expanding defence collaboration between the two nations.
The leaders also finalised a framework for maritime safety and security cooperation, aimed at strengthening regional stability and enhancing coordination across the strategically important Indo-Pacific region. Prime Minister Modi said the growing confidence between India and Indonesia is creating new opportunities in defence exchanges, disaster management, and industrial cooperation.
Beyond defence, both countries signed agreements to strengthen the critical minerals and steel supply chain, an important step towards securing strategic resources for future industries. India will also support Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) by sharing its technological expertise in electoral systems.
The partnership was further expanded through agreements to improve access to affordable Indian medicines and strengthen the capacity building of Indonesian doctors and healthcare professionals, reinforcing healthcare cooperation between the two countries.
In a special gesture recognising his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto conferred the ‘Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia’, the country’s highest civilian and military honour, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
