India, EU Roll Out ₹169 Crore EV Battery Recycling Programme; Apply by Sept 15

New Delhi, May 06: India and the European Union have expanded their clean energy partnership with the launch of a third joint call for proposals focused on recycling electric vehicle batteries under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council.

The initiative, backed by a funding pool of around ₹169 crore, aims to address critical challenges in the EV ecosystem by promoting sustainable recycling and recovery of key raw materials such as lithium, graphite, and cobalt. The submission deadline for proposals has been set for September 15, 2026.

Funding support will come from the EU’s Horizon Europe programme, while India’s Ministry of Heavy Industries will facilitate domestic participation.

The programme seeks to drive innovation in advanced recycling technologies, including high-efficiency material recovery, safe and digitalised collection systems, and pilot-scale demonstrations. A key component includes setting up a joint India-EU pilot line in India to accelerate real-world testing and industrial deployment.

The initiative will also focus on handling mixed battery chemistries, improving logistics, ensuring safety standards, and promoting second-life applications of batteries—key elements in building a circular economy and reducing reliance on imported critical minerals.

Ajay Kumar Sood said the collaboration is a major step in strengthening strategic ties and building a resilient recycling ecosystem as India’s EV market grows.

Herve Delphin highlighted the importance of battery technologies in the global green transition, noting that the initiative aims to bridge innovation with industrial application while enhancing mineral security.

Officials from both sides emphasised that the partnership will accelerate clean energy goals and deepen cooperation in green technology and sustainable development.
