India Emerging as Global Leader in Renewable Energy Expansion, Says UN

UN Chief to Champion AI Inclusivity, Sound Alarm on Risks at Delhi Summit

United Nations, Feb 17: India is being recognized as a global leader in renewable energy expansion, according to the United Nations, which is organizing a roundtable to discuss the energy transition in New Delhi.

The event aligns with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ efforts to foster a more inclusive global energy transition in accordance with the Paris Agreement. Key topics will include renewable energy development, grid strengthening, and investment mobilization.

India aims to reduce its GDP emissions intensity by 45% from 2005 levels by 2030, increase non-fossil fuel energy capacity to 50%, and create significant carbon sinks.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman noted that India has achieved two-thirds of its climate goals ahead of schedule, increasing its climate action financing from 3.7% to 5.6% of GDP. Guterres’ visit also includes participation in the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
