New Delhi, March 11: India has dispatched humanitarian assistance to Mozambique following severe floods that have affected the country’s central and southern provinces.
The relief package includes 500 metric tonnes of rice, 10 metric tonnes of essential supplies such as tents, hygiene kits and rehabilitation materials, and three tonnes of critical medicines, delivered aboard a ship of the Indian Navy.
Announcing the development, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said the assistance forms part of India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) response.
In addition to the emergency consignment, 86 metric tonnes of life-saving medicines have already been delivered through the sea route to support healthcare needs in the flood-affected areas.
The relief effort reflects India’s role as a first responder and development partner in the Indian Ocean Region and Africa, reinforcing its commitment to humanitarian support for partner nations.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the floods have displaced around 392,000 people across severely affected provinces, including Gaza Province and Maputo Province. Rising floodwaters forced many families to flee quickly, often leaving behind essential belongings and documents.
India had earlier extended medical assistance to Mozambique in September last year through a vessel of the Indian Coast Guard, supplying medicines, surgical equipment and healthcare consumables to strengthen the country’s medical capacity.
India and Mozambique share longstanding diplomatic and trade ties, with commercial links between Mozambique and western Indian states dating back several centuries before the colonial period.
