New Delhi, Feb 3: India and Bhutan are enhancing their cooperation in the power sector. Bhutan’s Energy Minister, Lyonpo Gem Tshering, met with India’s Power Minister, Manohar Lal, to discuss the optimization and commissioning of the Punatsangchhu hydropower projects and infrastructure planning through 2040.
They aim to streamline power scheduling approvals during Bhutan’s lean months. A significant milestone was reached with the inauguration of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Project by PM Narendra Modi in 2025, coupled with a Rs 4,000 crore Line of Credit from India to support Bhutan’s economic growth.
Additionally, cultural ties are being strengthened through the establishment of a Bhutanese Temple in Varanasi and an immigration check post in Hatisar. An MoU on Renewable Energy cooperation underscores their commitment to collaboration in various energy sectors.
