Govt Signs Pacts with DVC for Coal Mining in Three Blocks

India's captive and commercial coal production rises to 17.88 million tonnes in June 2026

New Delhi, Jan 16: The Ministry of Coal has signed coal mine development and production agreements with Damodar Valley Corporation for three coal blocks — Dhulia North, Mandakini B, and Pirpainti Barahat.

These blocks, auctioned in the 13th round of commercial coal mining auctions, play a crucial role in enhancing India’s energy security and fostering economic growth. Collectively, they possess a Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of 49 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and are projected to generate an annual revenue of Rs 4,621 crore, alongside an investment of Rs 7,350 crore, significantly contributing to industrial growth.

The projects are expected to create approximately 66,248 direct and indirect jobs, thus supporting regional development and livelihood generation. The 13th round of auctions, launched in 2025, involves both fully and partially explored blocks and includes new incentives for early production, indicating a shift to a more competitive bidding process in the coal sector that encourages private participation in commercial mining.
