Governor felicitated Dr Ujjawal kumar


Mumbai, Feb 24: Dr Ujjwalkumar Chavan (IRS) was facilitated at the hands of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday for his contribution in water conservation work and eventually uplifting farmers’ lives, in 34 villages in four districts of Maharashtra.

Dr Ujjwalkumar, who is posted in Government agency in Mumbai at the level of Joint Commissioner, along with like-minded friends resolved to create an infrastructure through social contribution to store 500 crore litre rainwater through his ‘social entrepreneurship’.

In recent times, agriculture has been a loss-making business and Maharashtra is notorious for farmer suicide. Next generation of farmers’ migrating to cities for pity jobs. Dr Ujjwalkumar along with like-minded people studied the issue and eventually embarked on a community based decentralised water management system to increase the water storage capacity of the land so that farmers can have a guaranteed second crop.

It is a social movement and there is no administrative cost. Volunteers also known as ‘Pach Patil’ – coordinate with five villages. He meets farmers and explain the importance of water conservation, survey land for the creation of structures for water conservation. The farmers pay only for fuel for JCB through contribution and other expenses for rent are paid by NGOs.

Dr Ujjwal said, “The toughest job is to unite the farmers and explain the importance of water conservation and how it can help them for second crop. Once it is done, then half of the work is done! So far, we have created 2.08 billion water storage capacity in 34 villages in Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Osmanabad and Satara.”

He added, “The result of our community work is visible – smiles on the faces of farmers! The groundwater level has increased because of water harvesting and farmers can have two crops every year – double revenue! In some areas, the number of cattle increased and so did dairy farms. There are some fisheries also.”
