After the outbreak of COVID-19, NLCIL Management is taking all preventive measures as per Government guidelines and also is initiating a number of proactive measures to prevent spread of COVID-19 at Neyveli as well as at all other project locations such as Tuticorin, Barsingsar, Talabira, Ghatampur, South Pachwara, Andamans and Solar/Wind installations in Tamilnadu.

Among  such  proactive  preventive measures, NLCIL installed  its first Disinfectant Tunnel which was manufactured in house in the plant-TPS-II Expansion itself  to disinfect its employees and workmen coming from various adjoining villages and township before allowing them into the plant. This has been successfully commissioned on 08.04.2020.

Employees/Contract workmen will be required to pass through the tunnel of 20 feet long wherein multiple nozzled spray automised  diluted Sodium Hypocholrite solution of 1ppm  for 10 seconds per person to effect disinfection.  This tunnel was fabricated from the materials  available in the Power Station itself without purchasing from outside.  The tunnel is 20’x8’x6’ in measurement.

For manufacturing the tunnel materials like compressor to send compressed air, 500/800  Ltrs or 800 Ltrs Tank a pump of  capacity of 0.5/1.0 HP  capacity are used. The water tank is positioned at an higher elevation to provide gravity flow  The chemical used for making the fog/mist is  “Sodium Hypo Chlorite” solution of  1 ppm concentration based on specifications prescribed by WHO.

Power Stations of NLCIL have  Electro Chlorination Plant, which produces Sodium Hypo Chlorite of 0.6% to 0.7% (6000ppm to 7000ppm).  This is diluted to 1 ppm by mixing   8.3 ml of above chemical in 50 litres of fresh filtered water. The approximate requirement of diluted liquid is 50 litres/hour for usage in the tunnel which is also an inhouse product. Similar Disinfectant Tunnel has been manufactured in the New Neyveli Thermal Power Plant  (NNTPP) also commissioned on 09-04-2020 . Similarly it is  commissioned at Arch Gate today  (10-04-2020).

Work is on to fabricate such disinfectant tunnels and install them in other Units of NLCIL also.  As this model has been found working successfully, it is also planned to fabricate similar tunnels inhouse for installations at all the Mines, General Hospital and main entry gates  into the Township for the benefit of employees, Contract Labour and the general public to get them disinfected.
