New Delhi, July 06: NTPC Bongaigaon on Saturday inaugurated the 5th edition of its flagship Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2026, reaffirming its commitment to women empowerment, education, and inclusive community development. The month-long residential programme brings together 50 girls aged 10–12 years from 12 nearby schools, marking the highest participation since the initiative began.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Jaikumar Srinivasan, Director (Finance), NTPC Limited, along with Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, Kasturi Maitra, President of Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, Anurag Gupta, GM (O&M), senior officials, teachers, parents, welfare organisations and representatives of the CISF.

Addressing the participants, Jaikumar Srinivasan highlighted that empowering young girls is essential for building stronger families, communities and a progressive nation. During his visit, he interacted with the participants and distributed bicycles to all 50 girls, encouraging them to continue their educational journey with confidence.

The four-week residential programme, scheduled from July 4 to July 31, offers comprehensive training in academic learning, leadership development, digital literacy, personality development, sports, creative arts, health and wellness, life skills, and exposure visits. These activities are designed to strengthen the girls’ physical, emotional and intellectual development while preparing them for future leadership roles.

Arnab Maitra reaffirmed NTPC’s commitment to education, social responsibility and gender equality, describing the Girl Empowerment Mission as one of the company’s flagship CSR initiatives. Since its launch in 2022, NTPC Bongaigaon has empowered 210 girls, including the current batch, while 10 per cent of participants selected through an independent evaluation receive free education at the NTPC township school, ensuring long-term educational support.

The programme also featured cultural performances, inspirational stories from GEM alumni, and a presentation inspired by Malala Yousafzai, highlighting the transformative power of girls’ education. Across the country, NTPC’s Girl Empowerment Mission has benefited more than 13,000 girls, making it one of India’s most impactful corporate social responsibility initiatives dedicated to empowering young women.
