New Delhi, March 19: The Government of India on Thursday issued an alert over rising instances of cyber fraud linked to LPG bookings, with fraudsters circulating malicious files such as “GAS BILL UPDATE APK” via platforms like WhatsApp to target consumers.
Authorities cautioned users against downloading or installing suspicious applications, warning that such files could enable unauthorised access to personal data and bank accounts. Consumers have been advised to rely exclusively on official platforms for LPG bookings and transactions.
In parallel, the Centre has directed states and Union Territories to strengthen administrative and logistical mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted LPG distribution. Measures include close monitoring of supply at the district level and facilitating the seamless movement of LPG tankers and cylinders.
States have also been asked to issue public advisories to curb panic buying, encourage judicious LPG usage, and ensure accurate information dissemination. Consumers are being urged to avoid unnecessary visits to distributors and instead use digital booking platforms, with home delivery services continuing as normal.
To stabilise supply, the government has implemented measures such as enhanced refinery production, revised booking intervals of 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions, and prioritised allocation for essential sectors like healthcare and education.
Additionally, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal have been activated to ease pressure on LPG demand, with support from Ministry of Coal and directives issued to Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited to increase supply.
The government is also accelerating the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections and has proposed an additional 10 per cent allocation of commercial LPG to states to further streamline distribution and maintain supply stability.
