Deepak Gupta Takes Charge as CMD of GAIL (India) Limited

New Delhi, Mar 01 Deepak Gupta has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL (India) Limited, A Maharatna Status PSU under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas marking a leadership transition at India’s largest natural gas transmission and marketing company.

A Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, Gupta brings over three decades of cross-functional experience across the oil and gas value chain, spanning project execution, global procurement, technology selection, business development, and large-scale operations management.

Since joining GAIL as Director (Projects) in February 2022, Gupta has led the execution of key capital expenditure programmes, including expansion of natural gas and LPG pipeline infrastructure, development of gas processing units, and deployment of critical SCADA systems. He has also driven the company’s clean energy and digital transformation agenda in line with its long-term net-zero strategy. He oversees operations and maintenance of GAIL’s pipeline network exceeding 20,000 km, along with associated compressor stations and process plants.

Under his stewardship, the Dabhol Breakwater Project of Konkan LNG Limited was completed, enabling all-weather LNG operations and strengthening supply reliability. His tenure has also seen the rollout of digital initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency, transparency, and project monitoring.

Gupta has held board-level positions across key joint ventures, including Talcher Fertilizers Ltd., ONGC Petro-additions Limited (OPaL), and South-East Asia Gas Pipeline Company Limited (SEAGP), contributing to strategic planning, governance, and stakeholder alignment. He has also previously chaired Green Gas Limited and Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited.

Prior to GAIL, Gupta spent over 30 years at Engineers India Limited, where he led major domestic and international projects, including the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex in Nigeria, HMEL’s petrochemical complex in Bathinda, GAIL’s petrochemical expansion at Pata, and Mongolia’s first greenfield refinery project.

His elevation comes at a time when GAIL is accelerating infrastructure expansion and clean energy investments to strengthen its position in India’s evolving gas-based economy.
