A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday, prompting a tsunami warning for the region, news agency Reuters reported.
The quake struck near Avacha Bay, a region known for its seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active tectonic zones.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the quake at a shallow depth of 10 km, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) put its magnitude at 7.4, with a deeper focus of 39.5 km. The quake’s epicenter was 111.7 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Japan has not issued a tsunami alert following an earthquake that struck Kamchatka, according to NHK citing the Japan Meteorological Agency. The earthquake caused waves up to four meters in parts of Kamchatka, prompting evacuations in coastal towns. The Kamchatka Peninsula is a seismically active region, having experienced a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in 1952.
