New Delhi, June 25: NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited (NLCIL), has entered into a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) Limited to develop large-scale green energy projects in Odisha, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s renewable energy ecosystem.

The agreement aims to establish, operate and maintain 1,000 MW of green energy projects in the first phase, while also exploring additional opportunities across the renewable energy value chain through forward and backward integration. The collaboration aligns with the Government of India’s vision of “Viksit Bharat”, energy security and achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions.

The Joint Venture Agreement was signed on 23 June 2026 in Odisha by Shri Devendra Pratap Singh, Chief Executive Officer, NIRL, and Shri Saidutta Biplab Keshari Pradhan, Chief Executive Officer, OREDA and Special Secretary, Department of Energy, Government of Odisha.

The signing ceremony was attended by Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Chairman, OREDA and Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Energy, Government of Odisha, Dr. Prasanna Kumar Acharya, Director (Finance), NLC India Limited, along with senior officials from NLC India and OREDA.

Under the agreement, the Joint Venture will focus on the installation and generation of 1,000 MW of renewable energy capacity across Odisha, subject to techno-commercial feasibility assessments and the necessary approvals from the respective boards, governments and regulatory authorities.

The partnership is expected to leverage Odisha’s vast renewable energy potential and contribute significantly to the state’s clean energy ambitions. The projects will be developed using a diverse mix of technologies, including solar power, wind energy, hybrid renewable systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Pumped Hydro Storage Projects (PHSPs) and other emerging renewable technologies.

Beyond the initial 1,000 MW capacity, the Joint Venture will also explore opportunities in green hydrogen, integrated energy storage solutions and next-generation clean energy technologies, helping create a comprehensive renewable energy ecosystem in the state.

NLC India Renewables Limited serves as the renewable energy arm of NLC India Limited, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal. NIRL has been actively expanding its presence in solar, wind, green hydrogen, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy and low-carbon power generation projects across the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director, NLC India Limited, described the partnership as a significant milestone in NLCIL’s strategic diversification into clean and sustainable energy businesses. He emphasized the importance of developing renewable energy projects using multiple technologies to support India’s rapidly growing energy requirements while reducing carbon emissions.

The collaboration combines NIRL’s expertise in renewable energy development with OREDA’s institutional experience in promoting sustainable energy initiatives in Odisha. The partnership is expected to accelerate renewable energy deployment, attract investments and strengthen Odisha’s position as an emerging green energy hub.

The project also aligns with India’s broader renewable energy expansion strategy, which seeks to increase the share of clean energy in the country’s energy mix, improve energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

As India continues its transition toward a low-carbon economy, partnerships between central public sector enterprises and state renewable energy agencies are expected to play a critical role in achieving national climate and sustainability goals.

Conclusion

The Joint Venture Agreement between NLC India Renewables Limited and OREDA represents a major boost for Odisha’s renewable energy sector and India’s clean energy ambitions. With plans to develop 1,000 MW of green energy projects and explore advanced technologies such as battery storage and green hydrogen, the partnership is set to contribute significantly to sustainable development, energy security and the country’s Net Zero roadmap.
