New Delhi, April 15: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has directed all FASTag issuer banks to immediately validate Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTags, following complaints of mismatches between system data and actual vehicle number plates.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, such discrepancies risk weakening enforcement, enabling revenue leakage and attracting penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The move aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, while strengthening transparency, compliance and operational efficiency.
NHAI highlighted that correct VRN mapping is critical for upcoming technology-led initiatives like Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, where enforcement actions such as e-notices will depend on verified vehicle data.
The authority noted that many mismatches stem from FASTags issued before integration with the VAHAN database, when validation relied heavily on manual processes.
Banks have now been instructed to urgently verify issued FASTags and blacklist those linked to incorrect or invalid vehicle registration numbers, in line with government guidelines.
