India-Suriname Ties Get Boost as Jaishankar Holds High-Level Talks

Paramaribo, May 07: S. Jaishankar, currently on a visit to Suriname, held a series of meetings with the country’s top leadership and officials to strengthen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.

Upon his arrival in Paramaribo on Wednesday (local time), Jaishankar was warmly received by his Surinamese counterpart Melvin Bouva.

Wide-Ranging Bilateral Discussions

The two leaders held bilateral talks, followed by the 9th Joint Commission Meeting involving delegations from both countries.

According to Jaishankar, discussions covered key areas including:

  • Trade and investment
  • Digital cooperation
  • Defence and energy
  • Development assistance and capacity building
  • Healthcare and mobility
  • Cultural and people-to-people exchanges

The External Affairs Minister said the outcomes of the discussions would help “further deepen and diversify” India-Suriname relations.

Meeting with Suriname President

Jaishankar also called on Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and conveyed greetings from India while reaffirming both nations’ commitment to strengthening their longstanding partnership.

He highlighted the deep historical and cultural connections between India and Suriname, which has a significant population of Indian origin.

Tribute to Indian Indentured Labourers

During the visit, Jaishankar paid homage at the Monument for the Fallen Heroes, commemorating Indian indentured labourers, known as Girmityas, who lost their lives during anti-colonial struggles in 1902.

He said their sacrifices continue to inspire struggles for dignity, freedom, and justice.

The minister also visited the Baba and Mai Monument, which honours the first Indians who arrived in Suriname, and paid tribute at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in central Paramaribo.

Interaction with Indian Community

Jaishankar also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Suriname, sharing updates on India’s transformation journey and reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting Suriname’s development and prosperity.

He described India as a “reliable and trusted partner” for Suriname’s growth and future cooperation.
