First-Ever Spice Freight Train Begins Journey from Gujarat to Assam

Ahmedabad, May 7: Western Railway has strengthened its freight transportation network by successfully operating its first “Deemed VP Rake” loaded with cumin seeds from Mehsana in Gujarat to Azara in Assam, marking a key development in organised rail-based spice logistics.

The 30-wagon rake transported nearly 420 tonnes of cumin seeds packed in around 13,800 packages over a distance of approximately 2,477 km. The operation generated freight revenue of more than Rs 25.28 lakh.

Officials said the initiative will improve connectivity between Gujarat’s spice industry and markets in Northeast India while promoting railways as a cost-effective, reliable and environment-friendly mode of cargo transportation.

The move is also expected to benefit traders and exporters through faster logistics and efficient supply chain movement. Western Railway said the successful operation highlights Ahmedabad Division’s strong freight-handling capabilities and customer-focused logistics services.
