DoNER Minister Reviews ₹3,108 Crore NE Projects, Urges Faster Implementation

New Delhi, May 14: Sukanta Majumdar chaired a high-level review meeting in Shillong to assess the progress of key infrastructure and development projects across the Northeast, with a focus on execution efficiency and inter-agency coordination.

The review covered 17 major projects with a total sanctioned cost of approximately ₹3,108 crore, spanning multiple states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura. These projects are being monitored through the PM-Ref Portal under schemes of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.

The Minister emphasised the need for timely execution, robust monitoring frameworks, and enhanced coordination among departments to accelerate project completion and ensure effective delivery of development outcomes.

During his visit, Majumdar also interacted with officials at the North Eastern Council, highlighting the government’s continued focus on strengthening institutional mechanisms to drive regional transformation.

Parallelly, DoNER Secretary Sanjay Jaju conducted field visits across northeastern states, including Mizoram and Tripura, to review project implementation and identify bottlenecks.

In Mizoram, Jaju held discussions with Chief Minister Lalduhoma on ongoing development initiatives. The state government acknowledged DoNER’s support in approving key projects, including the North Eastern Council-funded “Sustainable Cultivation of Mizo Ginger USP,” aimed at boosting agricultural value chains.

Mizoram, recognised by NITI Aayog as the “Ginger Capital of India,” is expected to benefit from enhanced funding support, improving farmer incomes and strengthening the rural economy.

The Chief Minister also flagged the need for greater transparency and systematic implementation of the 10% Gross Budgetary Support allocation. The Ministry assured that the concerns would be examined.

On infrastructure, discussions included a proposal under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (Roads) to extend the Khankawn–Rongura Hmun road by 1.7 km, enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating economic activity.

Additionally, the Ministry is exploring private investment opportunities for upgrading the Thenzawl Golf Resort, reflecting a broader push toward public-private partnerships in the region.

Overall, the review underscores the Centre’s strategic focus on accelerating infrastructure delivery, improving governance frameworks, and driving inclusive and sustainable development across India’s Northeast.
