City Gas Distribution Expands with 3.42 Lakh PNG Connections Gasified

Govt Eases Norms for LPG Consumers Switching to PNG

Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas: PNG expansion accelerates with 3.42 lakh connections gasified since March

New Delhi, April 4, 2026: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Friday said the rollout of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) has gained significant traction, with 3.42 lakh connections gasified and 3.7 lakh new registrations recorded since March 2026.

The ministry has advised states to fast-track PNG connections for both domestic and commercial users as part of efforts to ease pressure on LPG demand amid global supply disruptions.

Reiterating supply stability, the government said petrol, diesel and LPG availability remains adequate, urging citizens to avoid panic buying and unnecessary LPG bookings. Consumers have been encouraged to use digital platforms for cylinder booking and minimise visits to distributors.

To manage demand, households have been advised to adopt alternative cooking options such as PNG, induction stoves, and electric cooktops, while also conserving energy.

The government has accorded top priority to domestic LPG and PNG supply, along with essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions.

As part of demand-supply rationalisation:

  • Refinery production has been increased
  • LPG booking intervals extended to 25 days (urban) and up to 45 days (rural)
  • Targeted distribution of 5 kg LPG cylinders introduced

Sales of 5 kg cylinders have crossed 5 lakh units since March 23, including over 67,000 units sold on a single day.

To further ease pressure, alternative fuels like kerosene and coal are being supplied, with additional allocations from Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited.

The Petroleum Secretary also chaired a review meeting with state officials, directing them to prioritise LPG distribution for essential needs and maintain strict vigilance against hoarding, diversion, and misinformation.

The ministry reiterated that LPG supply remains stable, including for migrant workers, and urged citizens to rely only on official information.
