Jakarta, July 08: India and Indonesia have taken their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to new heights as Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a successful state visit to Jakarta, resulting in 20 landmark agreements that deepen cooperation in defence, trade, technology, education and maritime security. Calling the relationship “strong and vibrant,” PM Modi shared highlights of the visit while reaffirming both nations’ commitment to strengthening ties in the Indo-Pacific.
One of the biggest outcomes was the expansion of defence cooperation. Indonesia agreed to acquire additional BrahMos supersonic cruise missile batteries and India’s indigenous Astra Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (BVRAAM) for its Su-30 fighter aircraft. Both countries also finalised plans for the joint development of the strategically important Sabang Port, enhancing regional maritime connectivity and security.
The two nations also accelerated cooperation in the digital economy by launching ION, a digital commerce platform based on India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). They further agreed to pursue UPI integration for seamless cross-border digital payments, while India will support Indonesia in developing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for its 2029 general elections.
Another significant outcome was the signing of an MoU on critical minerals, including nickel, steel and rare earth elements, aimed at strengthening resilient supply chains. India will also invest in rare earth magnet manufacturing in Indonesia, supporting electric vehicle production and other advanced technology industries. In education, IIM Bengaluru announced plans to establish its first global campus in Indonesia.
During the visit, President Prabowo Subianto conferred the Bintang Adipurna, Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, on Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his contribution to bilateral relations. India also pledged technical assistance for the restoration of the historic Prambanan Temple, while PM Modi thanked the Indian diaspora for their enthusiastic welcome, highlighting the enduring people-to-people and cultural ties between the two countries.
