Buenos Aires, July 5 Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from Argentina’s President Javier Milei at the historic Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires. This meeting marked the start of bilateral engagements. It was the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation in 57 years.

PM Modi’s trip began with paying respects at the statue of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina’s revered freedom fighter. A ceremonial welcome followed, ahead of delegation-level talks. President Milei hosted a lunch in the Prime Minister’s honor.

#Argentina has been a strategic partner of India since 2019. The two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations last year. This visit comes at a vital time. Argentina is undertaking major economic reforms. These are somewhat similar to India’s past changes.

Both leaders planned to discuss economic and trade interests. The goal? Strengthen bilateral relations. India can offer valuable expertise. Think defence manufacturing, the space sector, information technology, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Telemedicine and digital healthcare solutions are also on offer, helping Argentina expand medical access.

Cooperation in mineral resources is a key focus. Especially #lithium. It’s critical for India’s green energy transition. An agreement on mineral resources was signed in August 2022. India’s public sector unit, KABIL, has secured concessions in Argentina since 2024.

Argentina holds the world’s second-largest shale gas reserves. It also has the fourth-largest shale oil reserves. This makes it a potentially important energy partner for India. Bilateral trade between India and Argentina has seen significant growth.
