New Delhi, Jan 15: Major Indian airlines Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have announced rerouting and cancellations of international flights due to the sudden closure of Iranian airspace amidst rising tensions with the US and ongoing protests against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Air India canceled early morning flights to New York and Newark, and adjusted routes for flights over the region, citing passenger safety. IndiGo’s Baku-Delhi flight returned shortly after takeoff due to the airspace restriction. Conversely, SpiceJet, along with international carriers like Lufthansa, is also impacted by the airspace limits, prompting operational changes.
The situation led India’s Ministry of External Affairs to advise its nationals in Iran to leave the country and to avoid travel there until further notice.
