This land sits along the Eastern Waterfront in Mumbai. The port wants to recover its money and start criminal cases against illegal squatters where it needs to. This clampdown targets these rent-dodgers.
The port needs this money for big development projects. Right now, it is planning to build the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina. It also wants to build new tourism spots. In addition, the port plans to build cruise ship docks and water transport networks. These projects fit into the national plan to grow the sea trade of India by 2047. But the port can’t start these works because it doesn’t have the cash. Many renters have not paid their bills for a long time.
The Port Needs To Recover Huge Unpaid Bills
The port managers say that some renters owe a total of about 3,500 crore rupees. This massive debt stops the port from spending money on public projects. So, the authority hired top lawyers to get the cash back. It wants renters to clear their bills right away.
Also, some tenants have broken several other rules. Some built structures without permission. Others rented the land to people illegally. Some even changed how they use the land without asking first. The port managers say these actions hurt safety and security at the port.
Big Companies Owe Huge Amounts Of Money
The port named some of the biggest rent-dodgers. The list includes Indian Hotels Company Ltd., Crescent Dyes & Chemicals Ltd., and the Timber Market Occupants Society. It also includes Provident Investment Co. Ltd. and Indian Vegetable Product Ltd. Other big names are Scindia Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and Subh Hospitality Ltd.
The port group promises to respect the legal rights of all renters. But it urges all tenants who owe money to pay their back rent. It also asks them to follow all the safety rules. The managers want to protect public property and secure the area.
