India’s transition toward cleaner and more efficient fuel sources is gathering momentum, with more than 80,400 consumers voluntarily surrendering their LPG connections in favor of piped natural gas (PNG), according to data released by the government on Thursday.
The shift has been facilitated through the MYPNGD.in portal and forms part of a broader strategy to expand the country’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) network while encouraging households and businesses to adopt PNG as a cleaner alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Growing Migration From LPG to PNG
New Delhi, June 05: The government said that 80,400-plus consumers had surrendered LPG connections through the portal as of June 3, 2026.
Officials highlighted that the transition reflects increasing acceptance of PNG among residential and commercial consumers, supported by expanding gas infrastructure and policy measures aimed at improving accessibility.
The initiative is aligned with India’s long-term clean energy goals and efforts to reduce dependence on cylinder-based fuel distribution systems.
Priority Supply for Domestic PNG and CNG Users
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, domestic PNG (D-PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) transport consumers continue to receive priority allocations.
The government stated that:
- 100% gas supply is being ensured for domestic PNG consumers.
- 100% supply is being maintained for CNG transport users.
- Gas supply to operational urea plants remains at around 98% of their average six-month consumption.
- Other industrial and commercial consumers, including CGD networks, are receiving up to 80% supply.
The measures are aimed at maintaining fuel security while supporting the growing natural gas ecosystem.
Hotels and Restaurants Encouraged to Adopt PNG
To ease pressure on commercial LPG demand, the government has advised city gas distribution companies to prioritize PNG connections for commercial establishments such as:
- Hotels
- Restaurants
- Canteens
- Food service businesses
Officials believe wider PNG adoption in commercial kitchens can improve fuel efficiency, reduce operational costs, and strengthen supply stability.
Additional LPG Allocation Linked to PNG Reforms
The government has introduced reform-linked incentives to encourage states and union territories to expand PNG penetration.
Currently, 22 States and Union Territories are receiving an additional 10% commercial LPG allocation based on their progress in promoting PNG infrastructure and consumer migration.
The policy aims to accelerate the shift toward pipeline-based gas distribution systems while reducing reliance on LPG cylinders.
New Framework to Speed Up CGD Expansion
To facilitate faster infrastructure rollout, the government has requested States, Union Territories, and central ministries to expedite approvals required for pipeline development.
It has also notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, under the Essential Commodities Act.
The new framework is expected to:
- Simplify approval processes
- Reduce delays in pipeline laying
- Improve land access for infrastructure projects
- Accelerate last-mile connectivity
- Boost residential PNG penetration
Officials said the reforms will help city gas distribution entities expand their networks more efficiently.
National PNG Drive 2.0 Extended Until June 30
The government has extended the National PNG Drive 2.0 campaign until June 30, 2026, to maintain momentum in household gas connection expansion.
Originally launched on January 1, 2026, and scheduled to conclude on March 31, the campaign has contributed significantly to network growth.
Since March 2026:
- Around 8.82 lakh PNG connections have been gasified.
- Infrastructure has been created for an additional 2.98 lakh connections.
- Total potential PNG connectivity has reached 11.80 lakh households.
- Nearly 8.98 lakh consumers have already registered for new PNG connections.
The figures indicate strong consumer interest in adopting piped natural gas as a cleaner and more convenient cooking fuel.
