PM Modi’s Norway Visit Set to Boost Bilateral Ties, Says Oslo

New Delhi/Oslo, May 12: Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, has termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Oslo as “historic”, highlighting its significance in deepening India–Norway relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors.

Speaking ahead of the 3rd India-Nordic Summit, Stener noted that the visit marks the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years. She described it as a major milestone, reflecting growing engagement between the two nations.

The ambassador identified climate change, energy transition and sustainable development as priority areas, adding that Norway is keen to support India’s ambition for green growth amid its rapid economic expansion.

Geopolitical issues, particularly the ongoing West Asia crisis, are also expected to feature prominently during discussions between India and Nordic nations. Stener emphasised the importance of dialogue among like-minded countries that support a rules-based international order.

During the visit, PM Modi is scheduled to meet King Harald V and Queen Sonja, and hold bilateral talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. The leaders will also jointly address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit will focus on enhancing cooperation in trade and investment, clean and green technologies, and the blue economy, while leveraging frameworks such as the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.

The 3rd India-Nordic Summit, to be held in Oslo on May 19, will bring together leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden. The discussions will span technology, renewable energy, defence, space, sustainability and Arctic cooperation, further strengthening India’s strategic engagement with the Nordic region.

The summit builds on earlier meetings held in Stockholm (2018) and Copenhagen (2022), and is expected to provide fresh momentum to trade and investment ties between India and Nordic countries.
