President To Lam’s India Visit Signals Vietnam’s Push to Deepen Strategic, Economic Partnership

New Delhi, May 6: Vietnamese President To Lam’s ongoing State Visit to India reflects Vietnam’s strong commitment to further strengthening strategic and economic ties with India, according to a report published by Nhan Dan, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

President To Lam is visiting India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a time when both nations are marking the 10th anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2026.

The report highlighted India’s rapid economic growth and increasing global influence, describing the country as a major success story in regional development amid global geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

It noted that India’s balanced and multi-alignment foreign policy has helped strengthen its international standing while enabling sustained economic resilience.

According to the report, India is actively advancing its ‘Act East’ policy, strengthening ties with ASEAN nations and positioning itself as a leading voice of the Global South.

India and Vietnam have steadily expanded cooperation across political, economic, defence and technology sectors over the past two decades.

The two countries elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2007 and further upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016. In recent years, both nations have also adopted multiple joint declarations aimed at deepening cooperation across key sectors.

The report stated that bilateral mechanisms such as strategic dialogues, security consultations, defence policy discussions and maritime cooperation frameworks continue to strengthen institutional engagement between the two sides.

Defence and security cooperation continues to remain a strategic pillar of India-Vietnam relations.

India has extended support to Vietnam through defence credit lines, training programmes, submarine-related assistance and supply of defence equipment.

The report noted that both governments are working towards effective implementation of defence cooperation projects and aid initiatives provided by India.

The report also underlined the historical and cultural linkages between India and Vietnam, particularly through Buddhist heritage and long-standing people-to-people ties.

India is currently assisting Vietnam in the restoration of the Cham tower complexes at the My Son Sanctuary heritage site, further strengthening cultural cooperation between the two nations.

Tourism exchanges and connectivity between the countries have also continued to expand in recent years.

President To Lam’s visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to India-Vietnam ties, particularly in areas such as trade, defence, digital transformation and Indo-Pacific cooperation.

The growing partnership is increasingly being viewed as strategically important for regional stability, supply chain diversification and economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
