Kedarnath Yatra Route Gets Eco Upgrade with Modern Waste Management

Kedarnath, May 06: The district administration in Rudraprayag has intensified eco-friendly and cleanliness measures along the Kedarnath Dham Yatra route, deploying modern waste management systems to ensure a sustainable pilgrimage experience.

District Magistrate Vishal Mishra has urged devotees to actively support cleanliness efforts and avoid littering during the यात्रा.

A key initiative includes the use of a baling machine by the Kedarnath Nagar Panchayat to efficiently manage dry waste by compressing it into compact bales, easing transportation and recycling.

Additionally, a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) has been set up at the shrine to systematically collect, segregate, and recycle waste. Around 500 kg of dry waste has already been processed, with expected revenue of ₹15,000–₹20,000.

The administration has strengthened sanitation infrastructure across the trekking route and temple परिसर, aiming to maintain a clean and green environment amid rising footfall.

The ongoing Char Dham Yatra has seen over 6.6 lakh pilgrims so far this season. The sacred circuit includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—four revered shrines in the Garhwal Himalayas.

Officials said the initiative reflects a broader push to balance religious tourism with environmental sustainability, ensuring the long-term preservation of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
