New Delhi, March 27: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reaffirmed that India’s petroleum and LPG supply situation remains fully under control, with no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG reported across the country.
India’s position as the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products ensures structural stability in domestic availability, even as global markets face disruptions. Retail fuel outlets continue to operate normally with adequate stock levels.
The government has flagged a “deliberately mischievous” misinformation campaign on social media, attributing isolated instances of crowding at petrol pumps to fabricated content rather than actual supply constraints. Oil depots have been operating round-the-clock to maintain uninterrupted supply chains.
Despite tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, India is sourcing crude from over 41 global suppliers, with increased inflows from the western hemisphere offsetting any disruptions. All domestic refineries are currently running at over 100% utilisation.
Contrary to claims of limited reserves, India maintains a total reserve capacity of 74 days, with an actual stock cover of around 60 days, including crude, petroleum products, and strategic reserves. Crude procurement for the next two months has already been secured.
On LPG, domestic production has risen by 40% following regulatory measures, reaching 50 TMT per day—covering over 60% of demand and reducing import dependence. Additionally, 800 TMT of LPG cargoes are en route from countries such as the United States, Russia, and Australia, ensuring stable supply through 22 import terminals.
Oil companies are delivering over 50 lakh LPG cylinders daily, with demand normalising after a temporary spike driven by panic ordering. Commercial LPG allocations remain at 50% to prevent hoarding and black marketing.
The government also reiterated that the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) is part of a long-term clean energy strategy, with connections rising from 25 lakh to over 1.5 crore and coverage extending to more than 300 geographical areas.
To ensure seamless fuel availability, oil companies have increased credit limits for petrol pump operators, enabling them to maintain higher inventory levels.
The ministry has cautioned that spreading false information regarding essential commodities is a punishable offence and warned of legal action against those attempting to create public panic through fabricated claims.
