New Delhi, March 11: Antonio Bartoli, Ambassador of Italy to India, on Tuesday emphasised the urgent need for de-escalation in the ongoing conflict in West Asia, stating that both nations support diplomatic dialogue to bring the war to an early end and stabilise global energy markets.
Speaking to IANS, Bartoli said New Delhi and Rome share common priorities in encouraging dialogue and peace efforts, while also working to protect their citizens in the region amid rising geopolitical tensions.
He added that an early resolution of the conflict is crucial to maintaining stable energy supplies and preventing crude oil prices from crossing $100 per barrel, which could disrupt global markets.
Oil prices eased below $90 per barrel on Tuesday after Donald Trump suggested that the conflict in the Middle East may end soon, while warning Iran against attempts to disrupt energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
Bartoli also noted that India’s growing economic strength and geopolitical influence make it an increasingly important global partner. He referred to a recent conversation between S. Jaishankar and his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani, where the two foreign ministers discussed the evolving crisis in West Asia.
According to the envoy, the conflict has already begun affecting global markets through higher transportation costs, rising insurance premiums and inflationary pressures, underscoring the need for a swift diplomatic resolution.
Bartoli further expressed confidence that the proposed India–EU Free Trade Agreement could boost bilateral trade and investment between India and Europe once finalised.
Separately, the ambassador welcomed Italy being designated as the partner country for the 40th edition of AAHAR – The International Food and Hospitality Fair, being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from March 10–14.
He highlighted Italy’s interest in collaborating with India in the food processing sector, including food production technologies, sustainable packaging, cold chain logistics and food machinery, to strengthen manufacturing and supply chains for global markets.
