India Now World’s Fastest Growing Economy, Says Canada PM Mark Carney

New Delhi, March 02: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday praised Narendra Modi for steering India to become the world’s fastest-growing major economy over the past decade, highlighting rising per capita incomes and structural reforms.

Addressing a joint press conference after bilateral talks in New Delhi, Carney described India-Canada ties as entering a new phase of “expanded partnership with ambition and foresight,” marked by intensified diplomatic and ministerial engagements over the past year.

Both leaders reviewed cooperation across trade and investment, defence and security, clean energy, critical minerals, AI, education, mobility and advanced technologies. Several MoUs were exchanged, including in civil nuclear cooperation, science and technology, skill development and culture.

Carney announced renewed defence collaboration, including maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and professional military exchanges. He also confirmed that negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) are being accelerated, with both sides aiming to conclude the pact by year-end and double bilateral trade by the end of the decade.

Highlighting strong people-to-people ties, Carney noted that nearly two million Canadians trace their roots to India and over 400,000 Indian students are currently studying in Canada. He further announced expanded collaboration between the Canadian Space Agency and ISRO, alongside new university partnerships in AI and health sciences.
