New Delhi, March 02: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in New Delhi ahead of his bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, setting the stage for high-level discussions aimed at accelerating economic and strategic cooperation.
Jaishankar said he appreciated Carney’s commitment to shaping a forward-looking partnership, underlining efforts by both sides to stabilise and expand bilateral engagement at a crucial phase in ties.
Carney, on his first official visit to India from February 27 to March 2, began his trip in Mumbai with a strong focus on business and investment outreach. Accompanied by Diana Fox Carney, the Canadian leader held interactions with Indian and Canadian CEOs, financial institutions, innovators, educators and representatives of Canadian pension funds operating in India.
Describing India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, Carney signalled Ottawa’s intent to deepen partnerships in energy, talent mobility, innovation and artificial intelligence, positioning these sectors as key drivers of long-term economic collaboration and supply chain resilience.
In New Delhi, Carney is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders will review progress under the India–Canada Strategic Partnership and assess cooperation across priority sectors including trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, and people-to-people linkages.
The two Prime Ministers will also participate in the India–Canada CEOs Forum, reflecting a calibrated push to anchor diplomatic engagement in commercial outcomes and private-sector participation.
