Kuala Lumpur, Feb 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strong connection between India and Malaysia through the Tamil language during his visit to Kuala Lumpur.
He addressed the media alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, stating that the recently signed Audio Visual Agreement would enhance cultural ties and bring their hearts closer.
Modi noted the significant presence of the Tamil language in Malaysia’s education, media, and culture, reflecting the shared love for it between the nations. He acknowledged Malaysia’s Indian-origin community as the second largest globally, highlighting their cultural celebrations and the common linguistic ties with Malay.
Modi praised the popularity of Indian films and music in Malaysia, noting Anwar Ibrahim’s fondness for Tamil music. He recollected the preservation of Indian traditions over centuries within the community and referenced significant cultural influences, including those of Thiruvalluvar and Swami Vivekananda.
The Prime Minister also announced plans for establishing the Thiruvalluvar Chair at the University of Malaya and a Thiruvalluvar center to further promote their shared heritage.
Modi concluded by recognizing the contributions of the Tamil diaspora in various fields and the global significance of Tamil culture and literature.
