New Delhi, Oct 10: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is looking to India’s Aadhaar card initiative as a model for a proposed nationwide digital identity system in the UK.
His visit to Mumbai included a meeting with Nandan Nilekani, focusing on how India created one of the largest digital identity systems without discussing commercial arrangements.
Starmer believes a centralized ID will ease access to various services, highlighting that digital ID cards will soon be mandatory for employment. Unlike Aadhaar, the UK system will not utilize biometric data initially.
In discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two leaders also addressed strengthening trade ties and announced plans for joint centers in AI, renewable energy, and other sectors to enhance collaboration and support economic growth.
