Water Resource Augmentation Works

JALA PARYAPTHA, the flagship CSR Project of the NLCIL, includes desilting and deepening of water bodies and water ways. It facilitates the augmentation of water resource for irrigation, enhances rainwater harvesting, irrigation and ground water recharging, flood control, facilitating rural development, environmental sustainability, strengthening of bunds etc.

Locations are chosen in consultation with the district administration for the benefit of the agrarian community in the region surrounding Neyveli in Cuddalore district.

Benefits

Ÿ The projects help in ensuring water security, food security, poverty alleviation, sustainable livelihood in agricultural sector in the operating region, offsetting the loss of livelihood due to the utilisation of lands for the projects.

Ÿ It also aids in flood control and environmental sustainability. The geological conditions at Neyveli Region are such that the upward pressure excreted by the sub- terrain water comprised in the deep-seated aquifer beneath the lignite seam is to be lowered by pumping the water continuously. The surplus water after NLCIL’s use for various industrial
and community purposes is continuously supplied to irrigate about 23,000 acres of land in the villages to the south east of NLCIL’s Mine-II, benefiting about 60 villages.

Thanks to the continuous works of effect of water conservation work, many people are benefitting from it in that district. Regulation of water for irrigation has improved and bunds are strengthened for improved flood control and access to sluices/ regulators. Apart from de-silting, NLCIL is also sinking the bore wells, installing solar powered pumps in these de-silted lakes and installing solar powered pumps for filling the lakes with groundwater, so that this water can be utilized by the villagers during drought or in summer seasons. Then, the company hopes, there will be an appreciable rise in the ground water table in the surrounding regions.
