Sarat Kumar Acharya, CMD, NLC Commissioned the Equipment


Two Bucket Wheel Excavators of 700 Litre capacity were erected and supplied by M/s.Larsen & Toubro Limited, Chennai in collaboration with M/s.Sandvik Mining and Construction, Austria and M/s.UNEX, Czechoslovakia at a cost of Rs 196 Crores including spares, tools, maintenance for one year warranty period and 3 years after warranty period. Department of Machine Design and Research (DMDR) of Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland was engaged as consultant to check the static calculations of structures.

The 2 Nos 700 L BWEs, each weighing around 1650 Metric Ton each, consisting of imported and indigenous mechanical and electrical components, were completely supplied in knocked down condition, were pre-assembled and erected from zero level to a height of about 28 meters. All the structural components and mechanical of the equipment are indigenously manufactured except certain critical components like bucket wheel gearbox, main slew and discharge boom slew gear boxes, main slew and discharge slew bearing, which are imported one.

The BWEs will be moved to Mine II for removing the overburden soil /lignite and guaranteed output of the machine will be around 1400 cubic meters per hour. The maximum cutting height of the machine is 20 meters above track level and 5 meters below track level.

The electrical components are supplied by M/s.ABB, Bangalore. The Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) drives are installed for bucket wheel boom  slew drive , discharge boom slew drive, bucket wheel boom hoist drive and cable reeling drum drive with the state of art Programmable Logic Control (PLC) .

In a simple function organized at the Specialized Mining Equipment Erection yard near Mandarakuppam, Neyveli, Shri.Sarat Kumar Acharya, Chairman, NLC Commissioned the two equipments. While addressing he lauded the hard work of L&T and NLC employees in completing the erection of the machines 5 months ahead of schedule.

With these two machines Neyveli Mines will meet the requirement of lignite to feed fuel to power stations.

On this occasion, Rakesh Kumar, Director (Finance), S.Boopathy, Director (Planning & Projects), Subir Das, Director (Mines), V.Thangapandian, Director (Power), Shiv Raj Singh, I.F.S.,  Chief Vigilance Officer, Executive Directors and senior executives and employees of NLC  and Larsen & Toubro Ltd., were present.
