Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 23rd instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme on Saturday, transferring more than Rs 18,880 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.44 crore farmers across the country. The event will be held at Tarakeswar in Hooghly district of West Bengal and is being organised by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare with support from the Government of West Bengal.
The latest instalment marks another significant milestone in the government’s flagship income-support programme for farmers. According to official estimates, more than 2.18 crore women farmers are among the beneficiaries of the 23rd instalment, reinforcing the scheme’s contribution towards empowering women in agriculture and strengthening rural livelihoods.
With the release of this instalment, the cumulative disbursement under PM-KISAN will cross Rs 4.46 lakh crore since the scheme was launched on February 24, 2019. The programme continues to be one of the world’s largest direct benefit transfer initiatives aimed at providing financial support to farmers.
West Bengal is expected to receive substantial benefits under the latest instalment. An amount exceeding Rs 907.21 crore will be transferred to more than 45.35 lakh beneficiaries in the state. This will take the cumulative PM-KISAN assistance provided to farmers in West Bengal to over Rs 15,055 crore since the scheme’s inception.
To create awareness about various farmer-centric initiatives, special programmes will be organised across states, districts, blocks and gram panchayats under the banner of “PM-KISAN Utsav Diwas.” These activities will be conducted with support from Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and local agriculture offices.
More than one crore farmers are expected to join the main programme virtually through video conferencing from KVKs, ICAR institutes, agricultural universities, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), agriculture mandis, PM Kisan Samriddhi Kendras, Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies and village-level centres.
Alongside the PM-KISAN disbursement, Prime Minister Modi will launch and expand several major agricultural initiatives in West Bengal aimed at improving productivity, risk management and sustainable farming practices.
One of the key announcements includes the rollout of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) in the state. These schemes will extend the benefits of the world’s largest crop insurance programme to farmers across West Bengal.
For the 2026-27 agricultural season, the initiative aims to provide insurance coverage to nearly 1.10 crore farmers covering around 30 lakh hectares of agricultural land. Crops with an estimated insured value of Rs 28,140 crore will be protected under the scheme. To ensure affordability, the Centre and State Governments will jointly provide premium subsidies amounting to approximately Rs 777 crore.
As part of the Digital Agriculture Mission, the Prime Minister will also launch AgriStack in West Bengal, creating a unified digital platform that will facilitate access to verified agricultural services. The platform will support fertilizer distribution, Kisan Credit Cards, Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), procurement under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system and various other farmer services through a digitally integrated ecosystem.
The Prime Minister will further launch the National Mission on Natural Farming in West Bengal to encourage sustainable and chemical-free agriculture based on traditional Indian farming practices. Under the approved action plan for 2026-27, the state will establish 346 natural farming clusters covering 17,300 hectares, benefiting approximately 43,250 farmers. The programme also includes the establishment of Bio-Input Resource Centres and the mobilisation of Krishi Sakhis to promote eco-friendly agricultural practices.
In another major initiative, Prime Minister Modi will initiate the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) in West Bengal. The scheme will cover the districts of Purulia, Darjeeling, Alipurduar and Jhargram with a focus on enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting crop diversification, strengthening irrigation and post-harvest infrastructure, improving institutional credit access and ensuring convergence of various Central and State Government schemes.
These initiatives collectively reflect the Government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector through direct income support, crop protection, digital innovation, sustainable farming and integrated rural development.
Conclusion
The release of the 23rd PM-KISAN instalment worth Rs 18,880 crore underscores the Government’s continued commitment to farmer welfare and rural prosperity. Along with launching key initiatives such as PMFBY, AgriStack, the National Mission on Natural Farming and PMDDKY, the programme is expected to further strengthen agricultural resilience, improve productivity and support sustainable growth in the farming sector.
